If you’ve ever opened up Procreate and felt overwhelmed by all the color choices, you’re not alone! Using curated palettes can help you have more fun with your art as it helps guide you and prevents “choice overload”. It also gives your work a more cohesive look! Whether it’s one you’ve made yourself or one you’ve downloaded, a good palette gives your project an instant sense of style and harmony.

A great way to build your own palette is by taking inspiration from your favorite things. A stack of vintage books, the colors in your garden, or your favorite classic paintings! I like to look at Unsplash (free-use photos) for ceramics and paintings that really catch my eye. Snap a photo and pull colors right from it using the eyedropper tool in Procreate, making many adjustments and additions of course. Taking note of what colors you’re naturally drawn to helps you develop your own unique palette. It helps to include a mix of light, mid, and dark tones. You don’t need a lot of shades, just a few that can play different roles.
